Treatment of Gum Disease

The main goal of treating gum disease is to control the infection. The number and types of treatment will vary, depending on the severity of the gum disease. Any type of treatment used requires that the patient keep up a good home care routine. The dentist may also suggest changing certain habits, such as quitting smoking, as a way to improve the effectiveness of the treatment.

The dentist or dental hygienist removes the plaque with a deep-cleaning method called scaling and root planing. Scaling means scraping off the tartar build-up from above and below the gum line. Root planing gets rid of rough spots on the tooth root where the germs gather, and helps remove bacteria that contribute to gum disease. In many cases a laser may also be used as an adjunct to remove and /or disinfect the diseased gum tissue improving the treatment result.
